This session offers a Marxist interpretation of three crises in neoliberal capitalism: the economic crisis, the political crisis of democracy, and the health crisis, in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic. It shows that the pandemic emerged in a context of growing inequalities and deepening crises in neoliberal economies and their political systems, and that the pandemic is likely to reinforce the exclusionary tendencies in the current phase of capitalism, with detrimental implications for democracy. In turn, the pandemic has revealed the limitations of neoliberalism like never before, with adverse consequences for the legitimacy of capitalism itself, and opening unprecedented spaces for left political activity.

Alfredo Saad-Filho is Professor of Political Economy and International Development at King’s College London. He is co-author with Ben Fine of Marx’s Capital, and numerous other works on Marxist political economy, the political economy of development, neoliberalism, democracy, and alternative economic policies.
