The state is an eternally topical issue for socialists - its nature, functioning and potential uses.  The contradictions between its potential as a vehicle for transformation and its role as an institution that itself needs transformation and ultimately superseding  is central to any perspective of revolution.  Nor is the state unchanging - its role in ensuring capital accumulation in a neo-liberal and globalised capitalist order is not the same as it was even half a century ago.  Politically, the part played by the state in obstructing Corbyn's leadership of the Labour Party highlights anew it's essentially coercive aspect.

Andrew Murray worked as an adviser to Corbyn during his leadership, and has served as Chief of Staff of Unite the Union and as Chair fo the Stop the War Coalition.  His latest book Is Socialism Possible in Britain has just been published.
