A joint event hosted by the International Brigade Memorial Trust and the Marx Memorial Library
Special screening of ‘The Brigaders Return’, a new film by Marshall Mateer, the IBMT’s film coordinator, based on newsreel produced by Ivor Montagu of the Progressive Film Institute about the arrival of the British Battalion in London on 7 December 1938.
Email: m.jump@marx-memorial-library.org.uk
The 40-minute film includes the original 7-minute film, ‘Welcome to the International Brigade’, which is available courtesy of the British Film Institute. The BFI digitised it in 2013 for the 75th anniversary of the return of the International Brigaders. However, the soundtrack has never been found.
Using archive materials and professional lip-reading, Marshall Mateer has been able to identify the speakers and some Brigaders in the film and reconstruct what was said in 1938. His new film also describes the Brigaders' journey through France, their arrival at Newhaven and London and chronicles their arrival home in cities around the country.
Speakers include Marshall Mateer. Free; booking essential.
