London, UK – The Marx Memorial Library and Workers’ School (MML), in partnership with The Peel Centre, proudly announces the opening of a new co-curated community exhibition, "Radical Clerkenwell Reinterpreted." This innovative project, funded by the Association for Independent Museums and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, invites visitors to explore the radical history of Clerkenwell through the eyes of the local community.
Opening on September 25 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Marx Memorial Library, the exhibition is the culmination of a groundbreaking project where local people were invited to explore the archives and library collections of the MML, uncovering the rich and radical history of Clerkenwell. From the Peasants’ Revolt, which gathered on Clerkenwell Green in 1381, to the annual May Day rallies, this exhibition sheds light on centuries of social struggle and activism that have defined the area.
The MML is home to an extensive collection of radical history – on antifascism, workers’ rights and campaigns for equality - with deep ties to the local area. Visitors will have the opportunity browse the exhibition featuring MML’s archives and the words of people who live locally, demonstrating how stories of local activism speaks to new generations.
"This project is a pioneering step for the Marx Memorial Library," says Meirian Jump, Director, Marx Memorial Library. "It not only brings our rich archival materials to life through the voices of local residents but also marks the launch of our venue as a community exhibition space, supporting our future plans to develop this area further."
The exhibition will be on display until the end of 2024 and will be accessible during MML events and the Library’s twice-weekly tours on Mondays and Thursdays. Visitors are encouraged to check the MML website for further details: www.marx-memorial-library.org.uk.
