LOUISE BRYANT

Louise Bryant was born in Nevada, USA in 1885. She met John Reed in 1915 and moved to New York City where she wrote for ‘The Masses’, the paper with which Reed and many other radicals were associated. Bryant married Reed a year later and in August 1917 they made the difficult journey to Petrograd. Whilst there Bryant wrote ‘Six Months in Russia’; her sympathetic eyewitness account of events in this revolutionary period (see extract). They both returned to the US in 1918 but in 1920 went back to Soviet Russia where Reed died (in Bryant’s arms) in that year.
