Denikin had been an infantry commander in the pre-revolutionary Russian army. After October, he was a key figure in the White army during the civil war and was supported from November 1918 by Britain and France. Denikin’s troops defeated the Red Army in the north Caucasus. However, the Whites, after carrying out anti-Semitic pogroms, were eventually pushed back to the Crimea. In April 1920, Denikin resigned as commander-in-chief of the armed forces of South Russia. He was succeeded by Wrangel, a cavalry commander in WWI who had supported Kornilov and joined the Whites at the outbreak of the civil war.
