Baron Wrangel originally served in the Russian Imperial Army. After the Revolution, he was active in anti-Bolshevik movements. Towards the end of the Russian Civil War, he became a General of the White Army in Southern Russia. After some devastating defeats and when it became apparent that the Red Army was going to succeed, he organised a mass evacuation of White Russians and their supporters via the Black Sea in late 1920. He became a prominent White Russian émigré for almost a decade after he left the country.
