GEORGY TCHITCHERINE

Tchitcherine had supported the 1905 revolution for which he was exiled for many years and lived mainly in London. Although he joined the Menshevik wing of the RSDLP he nonetheless opposed World War One from the outset. In fact he was imprisoned by the British Government for his anti-war activities. Like Litvinov, Tchitcherine was also released in a prisoner exchange for the British Ambassador imprisoned by the Soviet Government, George Buchanan. This deal was brokered by Trotsky who needed Tchitcherine’s knowledge of European governments and their foreign policy for the negotiations at Brest-Litovsk. Tchitcherine had joined the Bolsheviks in 1918 and in the following year he was appointed Commissar for Foreign Affairs.
